Garage conversions we have done near Chino
In Santa Ana we converted a garage in a historic neighborhood, coordinating with the city's historic department so the Tudor exterior matched the house. Another is underway in Pasadena.
What Chino owners ask first: parking
State law says a city cannot require you to replace the parking when a garage becomes an ADU, and Chino's code says the same. That removes the biggest worry most owners have. The rest of the rules are on our Chino ADU rules page.
Is this the right call for your project?
Call us for this when
- You have a garage full of boxes and want a permitted unit
- You want the fastest way to add a unit, using the slab, walls and roof you have
- You worry about parking: state law says the city cannot make you replace it
Pick something else when
- There is no garage, or you want it kept: a detached ADU in the yard
- You want to keep parking and the yard is small: build above the garage
- You are not sure which kind fits your lot: start with the ADU builder overview
After the final inspection: keeping it in shape
- 1
Keep the conversion permit
An unpermitted conversion causes trouble at sale. Yours is finaled; keep the card.
- 2
Watch the old slab edge
Where the garage door used to sit is the low point. Keep landscape water off that wall.
- 3
Run the bath fan
A converted garage is a tight room. The fan after every shower keeps moisture off the new walls.

We hired Jimmy to convert an 1100 sf garage to a 2 bed, 2 bath casita (ADU). He provided everything, from design to the final finishes. … While we waited quite some time for the city, Jimmy and his crews moved quickly with things once we had the green light.
Garage Conversion questions from Chino owners
Is a garage conversion cheaper than building a new ADU?
A garage conversion usually costs less than a new detached ADU of the same size, because the foundation, walls and roof already exist.
Do I need a permit to convert my garage in Chino?
Yes. A garage conversion in Chino needs a building permit. An unpermitted conversion can cause trouble when you sell or rent the home.
How long does a garage conversion take?
A garage conversion usually takes less time than a new unit. One client wrote that their garage-to-ADU project was completed quickly.
